Introduction

Hello, and a warm welcome on board! We're glad you’re taking the time and effort to learn, reflect and explore building resilience against burnout in our modern, challenging working environment.

We, the writers of this course, are Johanna Vilmi, a work psychologist who’s a true burnout prevention maestro, and Veera Virintie, an educational scientist focused on brain research. We’re also the founders of Silta Education, a company linked to the University of Helsinki with a mission to bridge neuroscience to practice.

This course includes the following types of activities to support your learning:

  • Quizzes help you ensure you have grasped the most important concepts.

  • Writing tasks prompt you to pause for structuring and recording your thoughts and discoveries. We expect you to complete these during the course. If you feel they’re too personal to submit here on the learning platform, you can alternatively write them in your private notes — just leave a note about it here.

  • Reflection questions are voluntary. They help you recognize how the course concepts are present in your life. Feel free to write down your thoughts somewhere!

  • Videos offer summaries and practical exercises for you to try at home.

  • Downloadable templates contain helpful frameworks, tools, and tests to use during and after the course.

Burnout, capacity at work, and health in general is a sensitive topic to dive into. This can spark challenging thoughts and feelings. That’s natural, and we encourage you to work through the course with empathy for yourself and your fellow learners.

Before we get started, we want to stress one point. This course isn’t intended for people suffering from burnout. Many of the preventative methods and activities we present require considerable energy and effort. They aren’t suitable if you’re exhausted and struggling to keep up. If at any point you recognize some of the burnout symptoms in yourself, you should seek personal help from a healthcare professional.
