The Emerging Technologies course establishes a general understanding of what emerging technologies are and may be in the future, providing an overview of the impact, applications, and implications of emerging technologies as a whole. To illustrate these concepts in closer detail, three emerging technologies are explored in depth with multiple real-life examples from various industries and personal applications:
Internet of Things: many environments are getting ‘smart’: smart home, smart farm, smart school, smart cities - IoT is a key element enabling this phenomenon.
Robotics: robots are appearing everywhere, from lawn mowers to industrial robots to healthcare robots - optimising, automating - but to what extent?
Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality: digital interfaces are evolving at a rapid pace - but this technology is more than fun and games.
At the end of the course, the learner will be able to:
Understand the working principles of the three featured emerging technologies and their relationship to the wider digital revolution.
Understand how emerging technologies can interact to complement one another and advance these technologies even further, e.g. IoT and 5G.
Discover real-world applications of these technologies in order to understand their impact and potential in daily life and work.
Develop a critical analysis of these technologies with regard to the opportunities, challenges, and implications for individuals and companies, as well as the wider society and economy.
