Emerging Technologies

Introducing IoT, Robotics, & Extended Reality.

Description

The Emerging Technologies course establishes a general understanding of what emerging technologies are and may be in the future, providing an overview of the impact, applications, and implications of emerging technologies as a whole. To illustrate these concepts in closer detail, three emerging technologies are explored in depth with multiple real-life examples from various industries and personal applications:

  • Internet of Things: many environments are getting ‘smart’: smart home, smart farm, smart school, smart cities - IoT is a key element enabling this phenomenon.

  • Robotics: robots are appearing everywhere, from lawn mowers to industrial robots to healthcare robots - optimising, automating - but to what extent?

  • Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality: digital interfaces are evolving at a rapid pace - but this technology is more than fun and games.

At the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the working principles of the three featured emerging technologies and their relationship to the wider digital revolution.

  • Understand how emerging technologies can interact to complement one another and advance these technologies even further, e.g. IoT and 5G.

  • Discover real-world applications of these technologies in order to understand their impact and potential in daily life and work.

  • Develop a critical analysis of these technologies with regard to the opportunities, challenges, and implications for individuals and companies, as well as the wider society and economy.
